“A deficiency of folic acid, more properly pteroyl-monoglutamic acid, results in a megaloblastic anaemia having the same characteristics as those encountered in vitamin B-12 deficiency.”

1.] Women are at high risk of having Folate deficiency anaemia.

CAUSES: –

Following are the causes of Folate deficiency anaemia:

  • Poor dietary intake
  • Malabsorption
  • Excess folate utilisation
  • Pregnancy
  • Chronic alcoholism
  • Excess urinary folate loss
  • Malignancy

SYMPTOMS: –

Following are the symptoms of Folate deficiency anaemia:

  • Palpitation
  • Breathlessness
  • Weakness
  • Pale skin due to anaemia
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Lethargy
  • Feeling faint
  • Headache

TREATMENT: –

Following is the medication given in the treatment of Folate deficiency anaemia:

1.] Oral folate, 1 mg daily for 4 months, is usually sufficient for treatment of folic

acid–deficiency anaemia, unless the etiology cannot be corrected. If malabsorption is

present, a dose of 1 to 5 mg daily may be necessary.
