Patent Agent exam
Indian Patent Agent examination is conducted by Indian Patent Office (IPO) every year Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks (CGPDTM) is located at Mumbai. The Head Office of the Patent office is at Kolkata and its Branch offices are located at Chennai, New Delhi and Mumbai.
Eligibility: Degree in Science, Engineering,Pharmacy or Technology, from any UGC approved University of India
Syllabus:
1. Introduction to Intellectual Property rights:-
It covers all aspects of intellectual property rights i.e. Patents, Trademarks, Geographical Indications, Industrial Designs and Copyright.
2. The Patent Law & Practice:-
It covers explanation and understanding of The Patents Act, 1970 and Rules with special emphasis on Paper I of the Patent Agent Examination.
3. Patent Specification Drafting and other documents & Interpretation
It covers all the practical and technical aspects of drafting of a Patent Specification and other documents with special emphasis on Paper II of the Patent Agent Examination
4. Prior Art Search (WIPO, USPTO & EPO)
Paper Structure:The exam is a three (3) part test.
Paper 1- will have 40 objective type questions of one mark each and descriptive type questions of 60 marks.
Paper 2- will have a set of two questions (different sets for science and engineering) on drafting of 30 marks each consisting of:
Drafting of specification from given claims and background.
Drafting of claims from given specification and the rest will be descriptive/interpretative type questions of 40 marks.
Part 3-Viva-voce examination will be based only on domain knowledge.
Age limit:Completed the age of 21 years
How many number of attempts allowed:There is no maximum number of allowed attempts notified by Indian Patent Office till date i.e. you may appear for the exam as many times as you wish and until you qualify as a Registered Patent Agent.
