Department of Biotechnology (DBT) was finally set up in February, 1986 and the NBTB selected Dr S Ramachandran as the first Secretary of the department. The DBT constituted a ten member Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) with heads of various scientific agencies and a seven member Standing Advisory Committee for North America SAC (0) to ensure that the Department kept abreast of global developments in the field of Biotechnology. The new focus on Young India is clear from the various Grants and Funds as well as Awards, and the DBT’s commitment to revisit the funding mechanism to ensure a quicker assessment of project values and disbursements of funds for research.

Types of DBT scholarships

Programme Qualifications Amount of Fellowship per month Application procedure
Ramalingaswami Fellowship A higher degree or equivalent such as Ph. D, MD etc with an outstanding track record reflected in publications and other recognition. Only  candidates of Indian origin working overseas are eligible to apply. Rs. 75,000/- per month Consolidated. Contingency Grant : Rs. 5,00,000/- per annum. Applications to be submitted as per Performa duly forwarded by the competent authority.
Tata Innovation Fellowship Fellowship is open to Indian nationals residing in India. A Ph. D degree in Life Science, Agriculture, Veterinary Science or a Master’s degree in Medical Sciences, Engineering or an equivalent degree in Biotechnology related areas. The applicant must have adequate professional experience in the specific areas. The candidate must have a regular position in a University/Organization/ Institution and should be engaged in research & development. The applicant should also highlight prestigious award(s) and other recognitions such as fellowship(s) of major academies. If he is availing any other fellowship he/she will have to opt for only one of the fellowships. Rs. 20,000/- per month in addition to the regular salary. Contingency Grant: Rs. 5,00,000/- per annum. Frequent Queries

What about Age Limit?

For Ramalingaswami Fellowship : As such there is no age limit for applying for the fellowship. However, most of the scientists selected are in the age bracket of 30-40 years.

For Tata Innovation Fellowship : Below the age of 55 years.
