Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) is an autonomous Grant-in-aid Institution of the Department of Atomic Energy. The TMC is comprised of the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) and the Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH). The TMC conducts Ph. D. program in Life Sciences and is affiliated to the Homi Bhabha National Institute (Deemed University).

The Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer & the Tata Memorial Hospital which are affiliated to the University of Mumbai for Ph. D. programmes, are engaged in research on different aspects of cancer biology including cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, metastasis, tumour immunology, immunotherapy, virology, chemotherapy, chemical carcinogenesis, tobacco carcinogenesis, gene therapy in animal models, tumour markers and global profiling of tumour using proteomics and genomics, microbiology, biochemistry and medical physics.

Junior Research Fellowships for doing Ph.D. Students with a two years M.Sc. (Applied Biology / Biochemistry / Bioinformatics / Biophysics / Biotechnology / Botany / Life Sciences / Microbiology / Molecular Biology / Zoology or related Biological Sciences), M.Tech.(Bioinformatics / Biotechnology), M.V.Sc. or M.Pharm. from a recognized University, with over 60% aggregate marks can apply for the entrance examination. Candidates awaiting for results can also apply. Candidates who have completed their post-graduate course of only one year are not eligible for the Doctoral Programs at the centre. Junior Research Fellows (JRFs) at ACTREC receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 25,000/- + 30% HRA (if hostel facility is not allotted) as applicable. The Fellowship is paid on every month after receipt of the monthly attendance certificate from the Research Guide / Principal Investigator. Candidates having Fellowship from agencies like CSIR, DBT, UGC, etc. can avail external Fellowship. Junior Research Fellowships are tenable for a period of 2 years, extendable by a further period of not more than 2 years, on an annual review/renewal basis. JRFs are upgraded to Senior Research Fellows (SRFs) after two years and receive monthly stipend of Rs. 28,000/- + 30% HRA (if hostel facility is not allotted) as applicable, on the recommendation of the Doctoral Committee (DC) after their performance in an open seminar. Extension for successive years is considered after extensive evaluation of the work done during the previous year. JRFs and SRFs are not regular employees of the Centre and will not be considered for any direct appointment. Candidates fulfilling the minimum eligibility requirements shall APPLY ONLINE. The application fee of ₹ 500/- may be submitted through Demand Draft, drawn in favour of “TMC-ACTREC” payable at Navi Mumbai or wire transfer through NEFT/RTGS (No fees for female/ SC/ ST/ Physically Handicapped candidates).

The candidates who fulfil the eligibility criteria will be informed to appear for an entrance examination (online) in their selected cities. Those who clear the exams are informed through their email Ids along with the interview dates. The short listed candidates list will also be displayed on the institute’s website about the interview dates.

In addition, candidates who have qualified the Junior Research Fellowship(JRF) from CSIR/ UGC/ DBT or other recognized agencies in the national level and applied will be called for the direct interview at ACTREC. Candidates who have appeared the JGEEBILS exam, ACTREC will post a list of candidates and are eligible to apply at ACTREC. These candidates must APPLY ONLINE and SUBMIT the printout.

Final admission of successful candidates into the Ph.D. program is subject to the candidates satisfying HBNI eligibility criteria and completion of other institutional requirements like medical examination. On admission into the Ph.D. program, the candidates are offered Junior Research Fellowships.

Junior Research Fellowships for Cancer Biology M.Sc. (Applied Biology / Biochemistry / Bioinformatics / Biophysics / Biotechnology / Botany / Life Sciences / Microbiology / Molecular Biology / Zoology or related Biological Sciences); M.Tech. (Bioinformatics / Biotechnology); M.V.Sc. or M.Pharm. from a recognized University, with greater than or equal to 60% aggregate marks. Those awaiting results may also apply. Candidates who have done post-graduate course of only one year are not eligible. JRFs at ACTREC receive a stipend of ₹ 25,000/- + 30% HRA (if hostel facility is not allotted) per month as applicable. The fellowship is paid on the 8th of every month. Candidates having secured fellowship from external agencies like CSIR, DBT, UGC can avail the external fellowship. The Junior Research Fellowship is tenable for a period of 2 years, extendable by a further period of no more than 2 years, on an annual renewal basis. Extension for the third and fourth year is considered after extensive evaluation of the work done during the previous years. JRFs are not treated as regular employees of the Centre and are not automatically considered for any appointment. Candidates fulfilling the minimum eligibility requirements must first APPLY ONLINE, and then SUBMIT a printout of the filled and signed application along with all the requisite enclosures mentioned in the application form and a Demand Draft (DD) for ₹ 500/- drawn in favor of TMC-ACTREC payable in Navi Mumbai (No fees for female candidates and SC / ST / Physically Handicapped candidates, provided proof is attached). Eligible candidates are called for a written entrance exam in Navi Mumbai at their own expense. Candidates who qualify in the written test are interviewed within 2-3 days of the written exam.

Candidates who have valid Junior Research Fellowships from CSIR / UGC / DBT or other recognized agencies – obtained after appearing for a written entrance test, are called for direct interview at ACTREC around the same time. These candidates too must apply online and submit the printout.

A list of candidates short listed for direct interview based on their performance in the Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS) is displayed on the ACTREC website. Candidates in this list who are interested in ACTREC’s Ph.D. program must apply online and submit the printout.

What is the selection procedure?

  • For Junior Research Fellowships for doing Ph.D. :
  • An objective type written examination will be held .
  • The names of candidates selected for the written test will be announced on the ACTREC website.
  • Candidates who qualify in the written examination have to appear for interview. Candidates who have already secured a Ph. D. research Fellowship from CSIR/UGC/ICMR/DBT or other agencies and are interested in doing their Ph.D. in Life Science at TMC need not appear for the written exam.
  • However, they must fill out the online form and their printed applications along with all the enclosures must reach ACTREC.
  • The list of eligible candidates will be displayed on the ACTREC website.
  • The TMC reserves the right to increase the minimum eligible requirements to a higher percentage of marks in qualifying exam, in case of the receipt of large number of applications.

 

For Junior Research Fellowships for Cancer Biology :

  • Selection will be made on the basis of an objective type written examination.
  • The names of candidates selected for the written test will be announced on the ACTREC website.
  • Candidates who qualify in the written examination have to appear for interview. Information regarding areas of work at ACTREC & TMH and the projects that are available to JRFs is made available on website or can be obtained from the address given below either in person or sending self addressed envelope (26 cm x 19 Cm) affixed with postal stamps worth Rs 10/-.
  • Alternatively, it can be downloaded from the Website. The Centre reserves the right to increase the eligibility requirements to a higher percentage or qualification.
