INTRODUCTION :-

” Alcoholic liver disease is a result of over consuming alcohol that damages the liver, leading to a buildup of fats, inflammation, and scarring which could be fatal.”

Alcoholic liver disease is the damage of the liver and its function due to alcohol abuse.

CAUSES :-

  • Alcoholic liver disease occur because of the years of heavy drinking. Over time, which causes scarring and cirrhosis.
  • Liver cirrhosis is the final phase of alcoholic liver disease.
  • This disease is common in people between 40 and 50 years of age.
  • Men are more likely to have this problem.

SYMPTOMS :-

There may be no symptom, or symptom may come on slowly. This depends on how well the liver is working. Some of the symptoms are :-

  • Edema, or swelling of the lower limb
  • A buildup of fluid in the abdomen, known as ascites.
  • Fever and shivering
  • Jaundice
  • Redness on palm of the hands
  • Blood in vomit and stools
  • Losing a significant amount of weight
  • Bleeding and bruising more easily
  • More sensitive reaction to alcohol and drug
  • In men, impotence, shrinking of the testicles, and breast swelling

TREATMENT :-

  • Corticosteroids and pentoxifyline may be used for reducing inflammation in people having acute alcoholic hepatitis.
  • Other medication which are being currently studies include : Probiotics and antibiotics, stem cell therapy and medicines that target the inflammation pathway.
  • In people with liver failure, the liver completely ceases the function. This can be an outcome of advanced – stage liver disease and often mean that a liver transplant is the only option for prolonged survival.
