Need for the Conference on “Drug Resistance”
Drug resistant infectious diseases have turned out as killer diseases for which no effective antibiotic/antimicrobial agents are available. The ratio of effective antibiotics to drug resistant bacteria/fungal/mycobacteria infections is very low. If no agents were discovered, by 2050, the expected mortality will be more than 50 millions, in which more than 40 % will be from developing country like India. The success rate is very low or nil for the cure of MDR/XDR infections like MRSA, VRSA, CRE, ESBLs, drug resistant gonorrhea/ pneumonia/clostridium infections and MDR-TB. Long treatment regimens for drug resistant infection are not only associated with severe toxicity but also affects the economy of people especially from developing countries and underdeveloped countries. The % drug resistance in India is 2-3 fold higher than that of UK, USA and Europe.
